Tampon worked...'cept not?

Today was the first time i used a tampon. I used a playtex gentle glide,it had a green tube and wrapper and went in pretty easily.I made sure to push it in far enough becuz of reading all of these saying you have to or you will feel it. I'm guessing it was normal size not light or super. I got it from my friend,brand new. once i put it in i didnt feel it at all but when i look in my underwear a few minutes later..there was blood and about 9 hours later (i know thats way too long,my mom JUST went and got me more pads) i took it out.and it HURT when i took it out. i know maybe becuz im new to this but it hurt way worse than when i inserted it,i dont think it expanded much though..... it was full becuz it was dripping. and my underwear had a full period worth of blood on them. I dont undersstand why. Arent tampons supposed to prevent that? and i know i had it in too long but the blood was there BEFORE it was in even an hour...HELP?!
