Party etiquette?

Years ago, one used to help tipsy guests to their car. This was perfectly acceptable, especially when cars wouldn’t go over 5mph. Then in the ‘90s, people started to become aware of how dangerous drunk drivers are. So it became proper to call cabs for your partyers. This was right for everyone then because cab fares were very cheap. Nowadays, however, gas prices are very high, making cab fares go way up. Often, guests can’t afford cab faire. Do you, as the host, have to give them money to take care of the cab fare? $15 or more per guest times multiple guests? No one wants to volunteer to be the goody goody designated driver who has no fun at the party. And with strict drunk driving laws, even her/his 2 beers make her/him a “drunk.” You could find someone with a van to drive them home but the gas would be pretty expensive too. Sleepovers are also out of the question when people have jobs to go to in the morning. Is it time to go back to walking tipsy guests to their cars?
